Today didn't start too auspiciously, with rank and smoky air putting us right off our pre-breakfast walk.

But we had a hire car arriving at 10.00 (it seemed easier to manage hospital appointments tomorrow and Wednesday with a car at our disposal), and we didn't want to have it sitting around doing nothing.

So we stuck to Plan A, and headed for Satow. The air was far from clear, but at least there was some blue sky visible, and the foul burning smell had disappeared.

And Satow is a very pretty spot. You reach it via bendy little roads, all green and pleasant; you pay MYR 5 to park your car; and then you set off up the short track to the waterfalls.

There are several levels of falls. I think the stouter-hearted and surer-footed can get much higher than we did, but we loved what we saw. There were butterflies everywhere, including bright blue ones, like little jewels, and we sat for a while beside the third fall, where it was beautifully cool despite the hot day. And very peaceful, with just the trickle of water and the whine of the cicadas to keep us company.

There's not been much rain over recent days, so we probably saw just a fraction of the wet-season flow. But I would absolutely not have tackled those rocks if it had rained recently, so there we are, you take what you can get.

It's not far from here to Azzlyn Lyn Seafood, our favourite pit stop in Telaga Air. The food is always good here.

Seabass in a delicious gravy. We also ordered midin (local ferns), which came beautifully prepared with garlic and brown butter

We passed two lots of burning on our way home. Small-scale, admittedly. But seriously, it's hot, it's dry, it's windy, and the air is already bad... Sigh...
