This was one of those lovely little expeditions that just evolve as they go along...

Best told in pictures:

road
On the road. The rain is clearing, and the clouds are draped dramatically

baskets
Coffee in Siburan, and then breakfast in Serian. But a quick stroll through the market first

clothes

pinkthings
I have no idea what these are called in any language... According to the stallholder they taste a bit like avocados, but only after you've done a ton of complicated things to them...

pisang1
Sarawak's bananas are always impressive

pisang2

tarap1
After all these years in Malaysia, this is the first time I'd met this fruit. It's a tarap, and the outside feels like a doormat

tarap2
It splits open surprisingly easily, and the little pods inside are delicious

kuehchap
Kueh chap for breakfast, from a little kopi tiam

arch
And then on to Tebakang

rambutan
It's rambutan season!

durian1
Even better, it's durian season!! Here we are, loading the boot with the King of Fruit

bridge1
The village was just a bit further on from our fruit stall. There's a wonderful old wooden bridge that goes clack-clack whenever a vehicle goes over it

shophouses1
The centrepiece of the village is a row of venerable old wooden shophouses. Some are looking very neat

Others have fallen on harder times

One of the problems is flooding -- despite the elevated position of the buildings. It doesn't happen every year, but when it does, it's pretty dramatic...

From here, we pootled back to Kuching, along roads already swollen by the Christmas holiday rush.

Finally, to round us off nicely, a tasty lunch at the Kuching Buddhist Society (it's MYR 7 for three dishes now, but still...).

Super little excursion. Definitely qualifies as a Grand Day Out.
