This is a snippety post, just to document a few more of the random nice things we've been doing over the last few weeks.
Food first:
The picturesque Old Bakehouse Cafe in Newark, which provides, amongst other things...
... excellent teacakes
The elegant Harbour Master Cafe, Newark...
... and the equally elegant lemon and poppy seed cake
Now here's something different... From the Game Keeper just outside Lincoln, this is a Yorkshire pudding wrap. There's sliced roast beef inside, it's served with horseradish sauce and gravy, and it's very filling...
Back to
The Staunton Arms:
Beetroot gnocchi, with salt baked heritage carrots, swiss chard, chicory, and chive cream
In case you're wondering (I was),
"heritage carrots" are varieties that got displaced by the desire to make carrots uniformly orange. They come in a number of colours and shapes, and mine at least were delicious.
Again from The Staunton Arms, this is sticky orange, treacle, and almond frangipane with almond creme fraiche and orange gel ("gel" seems very in over here at the moment)
Other interesting things:
Reminders of the civil war in Newark
Elderflowers
A tall poppy by the railway in Newark
A gloomy day near Nether Lock, on the River Trent in Newark
